If you're not familiar with After Effects, Motion or other 3D-motion programs but still want to do some animation-type work there's a quick and simple way to get it done: the latest version of Keynote, part of iWork '08.
If you've ever built a PPT presentation or even made a Keynote it's super-easy to use and very fast to learn. And unlike 3D-specific programs that have a longer learning curve and require using OBJ files and such Keynote works with just about any type of file type you can think of, and with all the built-in effects and motion controls it's like a mini-version of Motion, without the learning curve. Of course, the functionality is nowhere close to being as deep as AE or Motion, but it is a perfectly scaled-down method for creating similar motion effects.
Once you're finished creating your animations you can output them as Quicktime files and using the "custom" output settings you can go all the way up to a 4:4:4 uncompressed file or, even Flash.
Try it, you'll be amazed how simple, fun and quick it is to create 2D and 3D animation moves especially with text!
