Often you'll find some stuff not related to filmmaking... but fun anyway.Lumenosity Reviewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11253163030392051125noreply@blogger.comBlogger87125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439755764171528746.post-1283151181718811742016-09-14T06:06:00.001-07:002016-09-14T06:06:23.346-07:00Final Cut Pro 7 Editors: Rejoice !!!If you're a dedicated, dyed-in-the-wool FCP 7 user then you know all too well that our beloved FCP 7 (what I consider the "real" FCP, not "X" which is iMovie on steroids) is a long-dead platform with no hope of ever being revitalized by Apple.

And, if you're also not happy with the layout, workflows and different methods that are used by Premiere Pro, Avid, Lightworks and others then you've probably been wondering for some time, "How do I move forward with an NLE that will keep me current - and run on the newer versions of Mac OSX that are about to hit - that won't support FCP 7??" Right?

Well you can stop stressing because Black Magic has the solution: Ever heard of DaVinci Resolve? Of course you have, it's the defacto standard in color-correction/finishing world-wide.

Resolve has had a "lite" version of an NLE for years bundled with it's color-finishing software, but in years past it was extremely basic and not at all considered a "full" editor. With Resolve 12.5 that's all changed!

The two best things about Resolve? It *truly* is FCP 7 re-engineered with a similar layout, similar workflows and tools to FCP 7 so getting your head around it's interface is FAST and easy. The second thing: it's FREE!! Right! Nearly 95% percent of what Resolve is capable of doing is 100% free and will be going forward according to Dmitri Kitsov of Black Magic Tech Support.

So in the near future you can expect a full-on review of it's capabilities and why EVERY FCP 7 editor needs to move over to this platform - now!

Download the free version of DVR here and try it out for yourself - and be sure to read the instructions that come with it so you understand how to setup your system and prep your media based on the system you have:

So back in June I posted that I'd be doing a "kit" review for Mac-based editors who want an all-up solution to get their work done. Well I'm still waiting for the rest of the components to show up! The Focal Trio6 Be and the Equator D8's have both been delayed for months. So as soon as they both show up I'll be posting the big review!!

So what's happened since that last post is that I've been waiting to get the equipment from both Audio Plus (The Trio Be's) and from Equator, the new D8 monitors! Between my own company being really busy and theirs as well we've all been swamped with "stuff" and reviews have been on the back burner for a while.

But, I've got some time to catch up where I left off in the spring, so here's what's coming:

Last time I was there was as a consultant for Panasonic. Those of you who remember, my production company was one of the first to fully adopt Panny's P2-HD system and I became a self-made expert on the HVX200 and HPX500 along with the later-coming Varicams.

In fact I made the popular "HVX200 Color Test" demo which showed how you could get "chrome-like" color from the little P2 cam. That clip is here on my blog:

This year I'll be with DVinfo.net camera in-hand interviewing the unsuspecting. (laughs)

If you're going to attend, send me an email: robert@lumenosity.com
Cheers!Lumenosity Reviewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11253163030392051125noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439755764171528746.post-54234972859964284162016-02-20T00:33:00.002-07:002016-02-20T00:34:49.844-07:00First Review Items In !The first pieces of new reviews for 2016 have just started rolling in: The Focal Spirit professional headphones (which I'm listening to right now as I'm typing this out) and, the Lauten Audio Atlantis large-diaphragm FET-type studio mic.

Both Focal and Lauten went out of their way to create an excellent presentation in the cases their product comes in, but L.A. went a little nuts: A handmade cherrywood box with a 1940's style front clasp?!! (pics below) Gorgeous - and totally overboard! But I'm really digging the eye-candy both companies put into the packaging.

So stay tuned, new stuff is coming soon!!

Ever since the economy took a dump in late '07 life for most regular folk has just sucked, plain and simple. We've all been struggling just to get by while watching banks and Wall Street babies rake in record profits.

Like millions of others my business took a sucker-punch that knocked me out for more than 2 years; now in 2016 my business still hasn't come close to being at 2006 levels, not by a long shot.

But I'm a product of the take-no-prisoners, "We're not gonna take it anymore" '80's, where big hair metal bands were pumping out anthems of supreme self-confidence and "screw you" messages to those who'd stand in our way of self-fulfillment.

Nothing reflected those concepts more plainly than two things: An advertising campaign by Maxell that showcased a man sitting in his chair at home "rocking out" to his favorite tunes and being blown away by the experience (the pic above). And, what's become the defacto anthem of the 80's, a heavy metal single from Judas Priest, "You've got another thing comin' ". So prolific and enduring is the message in that song that it was used just late last year in another ad campaign... for Honda cars, of all things.

The timing couldn't have been more perfect.

I've been frustrated with my business being held hostage by the crappy economy for far too long, and last year finally got completely fed up - if not downright angry, and decided to take the bull by the horns, as it were. And it's amazing how perspective can change in an instant when you decide that the future is definitely *yours*, not the result of idiots in the White House or Wall Street making stupid choices.

And it's nice to see the economy in a steady, yet slow pace of growth. We're nowhere near where we need to be and too many people are still suffering financially BUT, for the first time since 2007 I can feel in my bones that we've finally turned a corner and a better future lays ahead of us all.

So if you think that:

- This year will be just like the last;
- If your own potential for happiness will be just a grim as before;
- That the economy has the ultimate power against us;
- Or that that your options for series-based entertainment will consist of more, "what kind of crap is this?", mindless, useless, reality or sorta-reality TV shows with ridiculous iterations of "Who gives a crap" Wars, "Go fish for this", or "Housewives of blah-blah" bullshit...

You've got another thing comin': Something completely different and fresh is headed for your screen. Very soon.

Lumenosity Reviewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11253163030392051125noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439755764171528746.post-50110466492023679502014-12-09T18:02:00.001-07:002014-12-09T18:02:14.329-07:00To Anyone Who Wants a Fulfilled Life:These days with things like social media, internet dating, over-the-top "get the latest thing" consumerism (how many people lined up for the new iPhone, for example?) and TV shows promoting wanna-be talent becoming instant stars our entire society has been slowly programmed to put less value on the things and people we have right in front of us, right now.

How many times have you been frustrated with something - or someone in your life and thought it was time to trade up for something different and hopefully better? Can you say your life has become immeasurably better because you have a newer cell phone than the one from 2 years ago? Did replacing that previous BF or GF with someone else improve your happiness? Did getting that divorce you just couldn't wait for totally turn your life around and it's all roses now?

Granted, there are times when it becomes valid to make a change to your daily life and even shake up relationships when they're not healthy or supportive, but I'm willing to bet that many of the changes we all make are unnecessary and really don't improve our quality of lives, yet instead simply cost us time, money and an often various levels of emotional chaos or instability.

Close relationships whether it's family, a spouse, significant other or even good friends are often taken for granted, the old saying that "familiarity breeds contempt" while sounding negative is often true, but it need not be.

I've always said that you truly only have 2 assets in life: Your health and the knowledge in your head. Everything else is far more removed from your control, that being money, jobs, material things and the people around you. So here's a piece of knowledge I wish to share that will hopefully help those who are contemplating changing a core part of their lives:

Family and those who you are close to regardless of relationship type have more value than nearly everything else combined. It's easy to become settled and unappreciative of those who make up your close circle and, it's even easier to consider letting go of someone who doesn't seem to be living up to your expectations or causing you any level of frustration or grief. That can be a short-sighted and even destructive thought process.

That doesn't mean you should put up with bad behavior or just "turn the other cheek" if you're not being treated properly and especially if you're dealing with a significant form of physical or emotional abuse, but all too often I see people who are willing to drop an otherwise decent relationship simply because they've hit bumps in the road, or are constantly finding frustration in someone they otherwise expected to be getting enjoyment from.

Perfect relationships don't just exist, they're built from both sides. It takes a willingness to accept others as they are and not who you think they should be; to be open to compromise and to listen and to voice your thoughts constructively. Certainly these things aren't always easy to do especially if you're already frustrated or otherwise unhappy but the results of putting effort into those concepts can be life-changing.

We all want to be accepted for who we are and not judged, to have someone who you know is on your side no matter what, and who builds you up rather than breaking you down. That doesn't always happen, obviously. But I also have found that when things aren't going right that a little effort towards open communication and being honest about how you feel or what you need goes a long way to opening doors and smoothing out those bumps in the road.

Take stock of the people around you and see if you feel you've got someone in your list that just doesn't measure up, then ask yourself why. Is it because there's something about them that you find annoying, or are they truly unhealthy to you in some way? Then ask yourself how you'd feel if they weren't around at all anymore. The answer may surprise you.

Facebook has made the process of choosing and keeping "friends" ludicrous, many of the people in our lists aren't real, tangible relationships. Who in the world can have hundreds or thousands of friends, people to actually interact with or have a close bond to? Nobody of course. Not even the Pope. That doesn't mean these people don't have value in some other way, but nothing replaces good old-fashioned in-person connections.

The real-world bonds you have to people are the most precious external asset you have in your life. If someone's not giving you what you need, talk about it with them. Feed and nurture the people closest to you. If you are thinking of disconnecting from someone, give deep thought to that process and consider the impact it will have on your life - and theirs. You will find that protecting and keeping the people closest to you will have the greatest impact to your overall happiness and enjoyment of your life, I guarantee it.

Best to All.Lumenosity Reviewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11253163030392051125noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439755764171528746.post-79060678826415878692013-01-12T18:31:00.001-07:002013-01-12T18:31:47.046-07:00Worlds most unique aircraft: The MD 200/199While on christmas vacation I happened over to ELP where a good friend has been storing what is possibly the worlds most unique and one-of-a-kind aircraft, the McDonnell 220/199 to take some photos of it for him.

It is serial number #1 because it was the first and only fully functional and flying airframe that ever left the McDonnell factory in St. Louis. There had been another airframe in progress but was never completed.

What makes it unique is that the fuselage is about 50% longer than a Sabreliner (T-39) yet sports (4) turbojet, pod-style engines under it's wings - which makes it almost resemble a miniature 707 or 720. The engine nacelles themselves are unique in that they have a rounded-square shape, something I've not seen on any other aircraft of any type.

Originally specced to be built for the military it was given the designation of MD 199, which later turned to MD 220 when it was repurposed for the role of 10-passenger "biz jet", a category that was literally created for aircraft, and the first to be certified by the FAA as a "business jet".

Today it sits idle, baking the in the hot desert sun where it's been for years, while it's owner attempts to find it a proper home in a museum.

The future of the MD 200 is unclear as it would be financially impractical to revive it to flying condition and so far no museum has the funds to get it transported. So it sits, being admired by everyone who sees it as a unique, one-off aircraft.

Taken with the iPhone 4s, which can't handle high degrees of light-to-dark differential, I had to tweak these images manually in PS to get a decent balance between light and dark.

Enjoy this rarest of birds.
While on the ramp I came across a still-flying example of a really rare bird, the "Super Guppy".

Originally designed for transporting large, unwieldy cargo for any client, it saw it's most of it's life in service for NASA moving large main-body parts for the Gemini and Apollo space programs.

This bird is still in NASA's care for testing and occasionally moving large pieces of cargo for the international space station. This is the only remaining flying version of this aircraft as all the other are either mothballed or in museums.

Specifically the area surrounding Holloman AFB and the nearby mountainous areas of Cloudcroft and Ruidoso.

I didn't get to travel around to all the places I wanted but got some cool wintery photos with my iPhone. The ultra-wide shots were done with the iPhone 4s "panorama" mode - about 180-degree turns.

For someone who spends 99% percent of his time in the brown of the desert southwest it was nice to get up to 10,000 feet and be in crisp, clean mountain air, away from humans and tourists.

Enjoy.

A pair of Midland FRS-type consumer-grade walkie-talkie radios that should normally sell for around $60-80 USD is listing on the Amazon site for a gut-busting one million dollars.

That's right, bubba. If you're an uber-rich billionaire with money burning holes in your pockets you can be the ONLY person on the planet to purchase this single pair of million-dollar radios.

Being the good Samaritan-type I decided to alert Amazon to the pricing snafu; their response was that since it's been listed by a third party it's their right to set pricing, and Amazon has no responsibility to pull down what is either a gross error or, an outright scam.

While I seriously doubt anyone who's not been declared legally insane would actually purchase these radios it's still amazing to me that Amazon would simply throw their hands up and play dumb.

An email to the listing seller should clear this up. Right?

One of the things that reviewers often do - and I'm guilty of this at times as well, is starting off with a bunch of background info on the product before getting into the meat of the review itself. This time around I'll spare you the reader, that agony and just get to it.
Because of my previous experience with Focal's other monitors I'd almost expected the little XS Book pair to sound like a scaled-down version of one of Focal's professional near-field monitors. Well, they do and they don't.

Right off the bat these little dynamos sound "boxy", for lack of a better term. And logically they should; the drivers are in a physically small-ish enclosure with not much airspace internally to push around. Ah, but if you take that as the overall impression you'd be missing out on the real powerhouse the little gems really are.

Yes indeed, they do have a narrow-sounding resonance that's akin to the boom-boxes of the 80's. (Those of you who didn't grow up with either 8-track or cassette tapes as a primary method for listening to music won't know what the hell I'm talking about.) And like any desktop-sized monitors they do have their own sonic fingerprint that you'd have to adjust to especially if you're used to listening to flat, near-field monitors.

But after you break in the drivers the XS Book really opens up, most especially in the ranges handled by the tweeter. And with the front-firing port you don't need these to be mounted near a wall to have PLENTY of bass reinforcement. In fact, even at mid-volume levels your desk will most definitely be vibrating to the point that you'd risk having a laptop hard-drive start skipping if it were on the desk. That's heavy-duty SPL's, my friend.

Overall the sound is definitely well-rounded, musical, with plenty of low-end to fill out the airspace near your ears and, once broken in the tweeters are bright and airy without being shrill. Do these sound like $1500 monitors? Of course not, if they did Focal would have transcended even what Bose can't do, which is make small, sub-5" inch monitors sound like big ones.

The main driver is 4" inch, the tweeter is aluminum (with some Focal-proprietary materials behind the main tweeter face that makes it more organic sounding), the crossover is at 3 Khz and the pair is rated at 55hz-22khz.

A few items of note:

One reviewer said that he found unusually high instances of floor noise, "white noise" or hiss as it was referred to with no input or "idle". I can tell you that ANY self-powered speaker will exhibit some audible floor noise at idle, even those costing thousands of dollars, but you have to be in an extremely quiet environment to hear it. The source of the floor noise is the built-in amplifiers that live inside the speaker housing and, because of their uber-close proximity to the drivers themselves it's nearly impossible to shield out ALL the RF energy caused by the amps doing their job.

Floor noise in the XS Book was not noticeable at all to me in my home office when it was totally quiet around me. However if I put my ear close to the tweeter - is in about an inch away, I could hear the customary "hiss". More than totally acceptable, the floor noise in the XS Book is actually less than some high-end active monitors I've tested. (look at my review of ANY M-audio monitor).

Also, the grilles that come with this pair have a very thick plastic wire-frame on the inside which unfortunately blocks quite a bit of the audio output from the tweeters; you need to REMOVE the grilles if you want to hear all the goodness the tweeters are capable of. Not sure why Focal felt it necessary to make the interior grille framework so thick and wide.

A few niggles I didn't like:

There is no "OFF" switch. Right, once you connect power and turn it on the first time all you can do is put the units to "SLEEP". Which also leaves you with the totally ridiculous white LED in low-power mode to remind you the speakers are sleeping. Totally unnecessary and very, very annoying, to have this semi-bright LED glaring in your eyes. Again, there's no logic to this lack of a true power switch and it's something very "Apple-like", where they leave a light on to tell you the unit is "off". ugh.

Also, the instructions that come with the unit...well, there are no instructions per-se. There's a diagram that shows you what parts come in the box - in various languages - and arrows to show you where to connect the various cables, the volume dial and the not-so-real "power" switch. That's it. Nothing about proper setup, break-in period... nada.

That's really disappointing because Focal is known worldwide as a top-notch provider of high-end professional audio equipment, so for this unit to be left out in the cold with no owners manual to speak of is very odd, to say the least.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The Focal XS Book is extremely well built with solid enclosures, superb craftsmanship, comes with high-quality cabling (every type you'd need) and most important, they're one of the best non-2.1 desktop monitors I've ever heard. In fact, this is probably the BEST stereo pair desktop-sized monitors I've heard, period!

The Sabre has always been one of my favorite fighters and even today it still has gorgeous lines.

It's interesting that while the F-16 is known as having the worlds best near-360-degree view, the F-86 had a gorgeous bubble canopy, not unlike it's prop-driven predecessor the P-51 Mustang.

Not sure when SectionF8 will release a fully compatible FSX version, but this one flies just great as is - and damned if it doesn't look nearly real in the air.

Here's a few screenshots from a recent "flight". Enjoy.
Sort of.Today I saw a video of a NASA moon-lander prototype being tested (and subsequently failed) for it's autonomous takeoff-landing capabilities:

http://youtu.be/yZPnTK3Bhgw

I couldn't help but notice how very similar it looks to another moon-transport vehicle, the "Eagle", which came from a little-known Gerry Anderson sci-fi series from the 70's called, "Space 1999".

Take a look at this clip and tell me you don't see an erie similarity, with the external truss-like landing gear and bulbous apparatus hanging off the side:

http://yt.cl.nr/YAt60HrSkzI

Unfortunately I can't find any clip on the web from the original series of an Eagle lifting off from the pad, but the same dust-blowing-out from beneath the craft looks exactly like this NASA prototype's footage.
(not that Mac's are trouble-free but certainly OS X users don't suffer the same daily headaches PC users do, not by a long-shot - and I use BOTH platforms daily and can speak from decades of experience.)

In this "talk-show for PC geeks" it was suggested that everyone on the planet, both home and business users alike, should be using "OpenDNS" to control the DNS IP addresses that your browser uses to surf the 'net. The claims were that using OpenDNS servers would both speed up the browser and, create extra security.

On the surface it sounded like a good idea and there is *some* logic to the arguement that having control over DNS server names/IP's would in theory create a more secure browsing environment.

OpenDNS has several levels of service offerings, ranging from free to expensive monthly fees specific to large business server platforms. I tested the home/free version both on the Mac and PC side.

OpenDNS is a collaboration of two things: Manually inserting the OpenDNS server addresses in your router or directly in your browser if you don't use a router of any sort and, their "updater" software which runs in the background and supposedly makes changes to DNS settings shoud the OpenDNS people decide that for security reasons they need to change something.

Without getting too technical about exactly how OpenDNS works let me explain it in laymens english and use a simply analogy:

The internet is very similar to the highways and roadways across the country. If you want to get from point A (your computer) to another website anywhere in the world (point B) you (your data connection) has to use these roadways to travel to where that website lives so it can share that information with you.

But getting TO that website isn't as straight-forward as you might think and here's an example:

Let's say you live in LA and want to drive to say, Denver CO. How you get there is totally up to you. If you're in a hurry you'd take the straightest, most direct route and use the highway system and it might take you 2 or 3 days to get there. Or, if you're in a sightseeing mood you could take the backroads and literally take weeks instead.

When you type in any web addresss or click on any link on a website your browser sends out a signal (a data packet in techno-speak) through your computer's internet connection which starts "driving" through the internet on it's way to the destination website. As your packet is traveling along it reads various roadmaps that tell it how to get it's intended destination - and here's where the trouble can happen: There's more than one roadmap, in fact there are millions, and it the information is incorrect or worse, if it's *intentionally* wrong, as in a hacker trying to re-direct you to another website, then your packet gets re-routed to the wrong place or worse, it gets fed information to report back to anonymous hackers YOUR computers information.

It's all incredibly complicated and convoluted, but the premise behind OpenDNS is that THEY are supplying a huge databank of "clean" internet servers that don't intentionally re-direct your packet to the wrong place and, are supposedly sweeping for the work of hackers who are trying to find ways into your computer.

That's all well and good, but what's really going on behind the scenes at OpenDNS is that by purposely installing their background software AND, by purposely using their DNS server database guess what... they now have TOTAL control over where your data packets go and furthermore, have a complete list of every browsing session you create, what servers your packet goes to, how long and even how much data you extract back and forth.

Not too long ago companies like Google and Apple were fined by the Feds for purposely putting tracing software in cell phones to track your usage, your location and other information and then using it for their own purposes - mostly to feed you advertisements along tracking your location. And they did this all on the sly, using software very cleverly hiden deep inside the operating system code of the cell phone itself, not external software.

With OpenDNS the same thing is going on; you're totally opening up your system to a big corporation and hoping and trusting that they're NOT going to use all this information that you're freely sharing with them for purposes other than "keeping your computer safe.".

In practical use I did indeed find that while using OpenDNS my web-page browsing was being purposely re-directed to other servers (you can see this activity in the address bar of your browser when you clink a link or hit "enter" on a manually entered web address). But instead of speeding up the browser it actually slowed things down - and by quite a bit - while all these "safe" re-directs were going on.

These obvious re-directs made me quite suspicious especially since one of their big selling points is that they're supposedly going to make browsing the 'net faster.

Then my next big red flag was when I decided it was time to get off the OpenDNS service, there was NO LINK to cancel or deactivate my OpenDNS account. Huh? They make it easy to sign up and share my information, but when I decide I DON'T want to be part of their world there's no method for saying "no thank you, cancel me." ?

The only way you can cancel your OpenDNS account is to send in a request to their tech support and request it. There's no explanation as to why this is the method however it's been my experience that internet-based companies who are doing something on the down-low don't make it easy to get off of their service.

In fact, that's how spyware works on PC's: you install some program that promises to "help" your computer, and then when you figure out it's not and try to uninstall it... it won't LET you uninstall!

OpenDNS has a plethora of positive testimonials supposedly ranging from home users all the way to Fortune 100 companies who swear the service is the best thing since sliced bread. And while I have no proof that OpenDNS is doing anything outright malicious, I was able to quickly debunk their claims of higher security and faster browsing.

As far as I can tell, OpenDNS is nothing but a very high-gloss method for allowing a big company to oversee your browsing activity and keep records on what you're doing. For what ultimate purpose I can't say, but when I consider the false claims of speed and security coupled with a not-so-direct method for cancelling an account I have absolutely no reason to trust them.

And neither should you.Lumenosity Reviewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11253163030392051125noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439755764171528746.post-79570726409299715152012-07-30T07:56:00.001-07:002012-07-30T07:56:46.717-07:00Got the Compressor blues? Use Adobe Media Encoder!I'm fortunate to have both FCP 7 and Production Premium CS6 on my system.

Just yesterday I was going to use Compressor to encode a very short Blu-Ray to then be authored in Encore. (There has been a workflow for this ever since CS4)

As fate would have it, Compressor started giving me the infamous, "I can't do any kind of work because I've lost my mind..." error message. Actually the error message was, "Qmaster file agent not found." First time I've seen that excuse not to work.

After spending 20 minutes trying to suss out the issue and running through the usual methods for troubleshooting - including using Digital Rebellions' Compressor Repair - I finally gave up and fired up Adobe Media Encoder and "got 'r done". What a relief. Remember those old Apple ads for Macintosh, "It just works." ? That's what can be said for AME.

In another post I did a comparison between Adobe Media Encoder and Compressor and the results were fanatasic, both in speed benefits and quality.

So why even bother with Compressor at this point? Eh, force of habit and I simply wanted to compare H.264 encodes for BR and see what the differences were. But since Compressor decided to take a nap, that just wasn't possible!

Adobe offers AME as a download on it's website however, it's not clear if you can use it *without* Premiere Pro also being installed or not. It's worth trying if you can't get Compressor to play nice.Lumenosity Reviewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11253163030392051125noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439755764171528746.post-13441745256739127072012-07-23T16:48:00.000-07:002012-07-24T11:53:59.044-07:00Bias Inc gone!If you're a user of Bias Peak, Peak Pro, Deck or any other audio-editing software created by Bias Inc, you're out of luck with future support: The company has ceased operations.

And what's worse is that nobody picked up their product lines, not Avid, Apple, Microsoft... nobody. The entire Bias product line is just dead.

If you've already purchased the software fear not, it will keep working presumably forever or, until you upgrade your system to the point that the software is no longer compatible, but if you've only gotten a trial version there's no real way to make it a full version now. Not unless you're willing to hack into it with some code-monkey wrangling that I'm sure people on the internet are offering.

I don't know the circumstances surrounding the companies demise but they never were that great when it came to customer support and some of their products really needed a serious re-vamp, such as Deck, which went virtually unchanged for years.

So what are your options for products similar to the now defunct Bias offerings? To be honest I'm not sure myself. Adobe has a few audio editing offerings, as does Avid and a few others, but an exact replacement for Peak or Deck? I just don't know.

I've been using Peak for years, ever since version 4 and don't have plans to replace it with anything since it does it's job quite well, but at some point I'll have to invest in something that has support!

FYI to the community.Lumenosity Reviewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11253163030392051125noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439755764171528746.post-58484251238797829182012-07-01T09:30:00.001-07:002012-07-01T09:31:18.046-07:00VirtualPilot3D: A repackaged flight-sim scam - again! Not long ago I published an article about "Pro Flight Simulator", and that it is a full-on scam to swindle you out of your hard-earned cash (see post for details).

Now it appears the same people who created PFS have re-named their high-gloss, flight simulator scam into "Virtual Pilot 3D" with a new website. Apparently there's big profit in scamming flight-sim enthusiasts into purchasing what you can actually get for FREE, otherwise there wouldn't be this refresh of an old scam.

If I had the time and money I'd make it a point to legally go after these f****rs and shut them down. No, it's not like they're cheating the elderly out of their healthcare funds or abusing little children, but the blatant and rampant attempt to sell their re-packaged crap is offensive, nonetheless.

If you believe their hype, they make it appear that you'd be purchasing the "Mercedes Benz" of flight-sim software, but in fact all you'd end up with is a Mecury Merkur, with all the warts and failures.

For those unfamiliar with the original Pro Flight Simulator scam: It's a retail packaging of FREE software called, "Flight Gear", which has been around for years and is open-source. The only difference between FG and PFS - and now VirtualPilot3D - is that they compiled all this free data into a self-installing routine, rather than you having to manually bind and install the Flight Gear data yourself.

And for this "favor" of creating an installer, you can throw out the window as little as $67 dollars on "special" or, if your money is just burning a hole in your wallet you can give them as much as $120 - and more! All for a product that is and has been 100% free!

By contrast, the GOLD version of Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX) which includes the Acceleration Pack is now avaialble for direct download for less than $30. And you can still purchase the DVD set for less than $19 at some retailers.

And as far as I'm concerned, FSX is still the undisputed king of flight-simulation software. And yes, that's includind comparing it to the recently released Aerofly FS, Microsoft Flight, and X-Plane 10. And for those who wish to debate that assessment, save it for another thread; this topic is about helping people from throwing away their money.

If you're into or curious about flight-sim software, don't get hooked by the ultra-glossy campaign for either Pro Flight Simulator or, VirtualPilot3D. They're both scams, both software packages are actually available for free AND, they don't compare to what FSX has to offer. Not even close.Lumenosity Reviewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11253163030392051125noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439755764171528746.post-20264316723880308782012-06-11T08:35:00.000-07:002012-06-11T08:39:16.066-07:00As close to Top Gun as it gets.
Back during the '08 recession (which we're still not out the woods from yet) Microsoft announced that the ACES Studio which created FS9 and FSX was being shut down. Then a year later word came that another division of ACES was being revitalized and a new version of FSX was in the works. Suffice it to say everyone in the flight-sim community was abuzz and waiting to see what MS would offer us.

As of February 29th the wait is over and we now have "Microsoft Flight" as the supposed FSX replacement. I can sum up the review of this new sim with one word: Crap.

What MS has done to the venerable FSX platform is nothing short of despicable. This new "Flight" simulation should have the word "simulation" stripped from it's genre, as this is much more game-like than a simulation. So what's wrong with Microsoft Flight? Here's a simple breakdown list of some of the most obvious problems:

1. All that is available to fly around in is the Hawaiian Islands - and to get full access to all the areas and features you have to pay $60 bucks! You can buy a "gold" copy of FSX (which now comes with the Acceleration pack built-in) for less than $30 dollars and you get THE ENTIRE PLANET!

2. Only 2 aircraft readily available; a few others you have to purchase. FSX planes are NOT compatible with this sim and there's no method to install third-party add-ons - yet.

3. No tower view!! Huh?

4. You're forced to start off with "lessons" on how to fly one plane; to gain access to other planes/areas to have to pass more "lessons".

5. Aircraft graphics seem to be OK, but terrain is just fair, even on high settings. Add-on packs for FSX blow Flight away by a far margin.

I could go on with pages of rants about why this new sim really isn't a sim anymore, and die-hard FSX fans - and even student pilots will be severely disappointed in this new release from MS.

The king of the hill has been and still is FSX. I seriously doubt MS will take notice of all the poor reviews MS Flight is getting and retool this game back into the King of Flight Simulation that it's been for decades, but for now if you're into FSX then stick with it.

On another related note: Ikarus has created a new flight-sim of it's own, based around it's years of experience with radio-control PC-based trainers (they use the radio transmitter hooked up to your PC to control a virtual RC model). It's called, Aerofly FS and while it's just been released in the EU it's not available in the USA just yet. But, the graphics capabilities of this sim would easily outpace both FSX and MS Flight, so that's worth watching for.Lumenosity Reviewshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11253163030392051125noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439755764171528746.post-85914996467431925292011-12-30T11:25:00.004-07:002012-06-01T21:20:03.502-07:00HVX200 Color Test - Again!

Set the "Way Back" machine for 2005 after the venerable HVX200 hit the HD professional video market:

This was a camera test I created to show just how gorgeous the little Panasonic could look if you dug deep into camera settings to make it more "film like".

Obviously this camera has been succeeded by the HVX200A and HPX170 and of course the newer crop of AVCHD-based cameras such as the AF100 and F3 however, it still amazes me how good this "older" camera still makes images - and it's newer brother the HPX170 is even better.

And personally, I still prefer the P2 cams 422 color space and global shutter to any flavor of 4.2.0 AVCHD and it's associated rolling-shutter issues.

So while the HVX200 is old tech now, it's always good to know that any professional camera can be tweaked to create almost any "look", if you know what you're doing.

Enjoy this blast from the past:
Back in '08-'09 there was a flurry of new, advanced-animation 3D screen-savers for Mac OSX that hit the 'net just before the holidays.

Since then, nothing new has really come out, in fact some of the oldies going back to OS 10.5 aren't around anymore. Worse yet, many aren't compatible with OS 10.7 Lion! Huh?

To date the best OSX Holiday-saver I've seen is "Snowmen" from Jason Sikes. You can get your copy here:

http://www.neonzen.com/Downloads.html

If you know of any newer screen-savers for OSX that are this well-done and look this good, I'd love to hear about it!

Cheers, and Happy Holidays to all.

Canon did indeed reveal a new HD camcorder system, the C300/PL. Technically two different bodies with the latter offering a PL mount rather than Canon EOS type.

Unfortunately for Canon I can't help but feel they really missed the mark here. This new camera only shoots an 8-bit MPEG2 long-GOP codec. Yes, it's a 4:2:2 color space at 50Mbps, but it's still long-GOP using a CMOS chip which means the dreaded rolling shutter issue still exists.

And the price point is way off too, starting somewhere between $15 to $20K. RED also just announced the long awaited Scarlet, which seems to do the same job but offers RAW capabilities and few other niceties the Canon doesn't - at half the price.

And to top it off, Canon makes mention of yet another DSLR that's supposed to have 4K HD video capabilities. (??) Huh? Why the hell didn't they put the 4K option in this new cinema-type camera body instead of a DSLR? That just makes no sense.

Now if the Panasonic AF100 and the Sony F3 hadn't already hit the market - and if Scarlet wasn't an option - then Canon would surely have cornered the market on a truly game-changing digital-cinema camcorder. But all they've accomplished is a slight tweaking on already shipping technology and put the Canon logo on it. That's hardly game-changing and what's worse, there's really no value-add to this new offering.

Neither of these new cameras is shipping yet so the dust is far from being cleared out yet from this latest announcement, but personally for the money/capabilities the Canon is offering you'd be better off with either the Sony F3 or Scarlet.

Vincent LaForet, who almost single handedly showed the world what DSLR video was capable of, has a video review of his use of the new C300 but unfortunately it's quite obvious he was paid by Canon to use it for a new film and, to give a subsequent glowing review of the new toy. So basically his supposedly unbiased "review" is easily debunked by the reality of what this new camera does and doesn't offer, and the fact that he's had his hands in Canon's pockets now for years also adds to the review being less than independent and without bias.

I really hate it when over-glossy marketing hype attempts to take over reality, something Apple has mastered for years, but clearly Canon has been drinking their own Kool-Aid and is now offering the public to share the drink.
1992 KAWASAKI ZEPHYR 750 REVIEW

It may seem odd to some that a review is being given to a motorcycle that's more than 10 years old but in fact, one of the great things about 'bikes is that regardless of age most of them (with few exception to the exotics) are just as viable today as when they were brand-new. The reason for this is that little has changed in motorcycle technology. Sure, newer bikes have fuel-injection rather than carburetors and the ultra-high-end sport-bikes have engine and frame technology that's become completely high-tech, but at the end of the day does all this expensive technology make for a more enjoyable ride? No, it's still just a motorcycle with 2 wheels, a seat, side-stand, mirrors, brake and gear-shift levers.

To wit, the 1992 Kawasaki Zephyr 750 remains one of the best all-around "standard" style 'bikes ever produced. Based on the bullet-proof oil-air cooled engine in use for more than 40 years and frame designs going back to the 1970's legendary "Z1" the Zephyr 750 combines classic design with modern touches, such as the three-spoked, brushed lip magnesium wheels, a 4-into-2 chrome exhaust and updated emissions controls for EPA regulations.

The Zephyr isn't a sport-bike by design but it's no slouch either; twist the throttle on the rev-happy motor and you'll be greeted with plenty of low-end torque for full-stop starts and even more pull from a roll-on power-up. And unlike it's Ninja cousins it's not top-heavy with the power-band giving the rider a very usable boost right in the middle about 5000rpm.

The decades-old engine design is not only rock-stable reliable but glass smooth too; since the compression ratio of this older motor design isn't pushed to the limits like the ZX series the engine doesn't have to work as hard nor rev as high to find it's usable power, making the Zephyr as playful in town as it is comfortable on extended high-speed freeway jaunts. And unlike it's typically buzzy Ninja cousins you won't find any annoying bar or footpeg vibrations killing your desire for long rides.

The exhaust note from the dual pipes is equally pleasing, with a very smooth purr at idle up to low-level rpms and opening up with a slight growl with hard acceleration or high-end rpms.

From the cockpit the retro-style chrome plated gauges are easy to read and adds to the nostalgic effect the bike produces from onlookers. And from the seat, the handlebar and footpeg distance and positioning are near-perfect, making the Zephyr 750 the most comfortable and best ergonomically designed bike I've ever ridden or owned. Great ergonomics is something Honda totally missed the boat with on their earlier Nighthawk-S and later "Nighthawk" 750 as their footpegs were positioned too far forward to properly setup a natural balance between your hands, feet and butt.

But the overall riding experience in the Zephyr 750 is so good it's almost hard to describe. The combination of ultra-smooth motor, predictable and usable power-band, superb riding position and retro-yet-gorgeous looks really sets this bike apart from everything else on the road, even today in 2009. In fact, there's no bike in current production today at any price that comes close to the near-perfect riding experience from the '92 Zephyr 750. None.

So how is the ride on the 750 Zephyr? I've always said that riding a 'bike is the closest thing to flying while stuck on the ground and riding the 750 Zephyr certainly falls into that same feeling of freedom and a general sense of excitement.

Because the frame is the "old-school" dual-downtube design which cradles the engine rather than making it a stressed member there's plenty of flex when you bank the Zephyr hard-over into a corner. You can definitely feel the swing-arm bend to outside of the corner you're in but at the same time the frame is transmitting 100% feedback from the road and tires; you know *exactly* the point just before either tire starts to lose traction and can either back off throttle or unwind the lean-angle before you start kissing precious metal to the road.

In most standard and even low-end sport-bikes one of the major complaints from aggressive riding is that the stock fork-springs become easily overloaded and even bottom-out during hard braking. I never found that to be the case with the 750 Zephyr and never did any alterations to the front-end.

Similarly, the dual-shock rear suspension had ample spring pre-load to adjust to my regularly aggressive jaunts through the twisties and never seemed to get out of sorts. I often wondered how the 'bike would handle if it did have a box-section aluminum frame rather than the decades old dual downtube but I'm sure it would have made for a more ZX-7-type stiffness rather than a compliant ride that could handle being tossed around.

One of the great things about the bike is that because of it's retro-meets-modern look most other riders dismissed it as being lethargic and not much of a performer. I can't tell you how many times I got surprised looks from Gxx'er, Ninja and YZF riders who couldn't believe that not only could I gain on them in corners but often pass. Of course in a straight-line it was no-contest as the pure sport-bikes would out-muscle the Zephyr with greater horsepower. In fact even the '92 ZX-6 E model made more horsepower and was more fuel efficient than the 750 Zephyr. But again, being the fastest wasn't the point of owning a Zephyr.

And speaking of performance there's yet another benefit to not having a pure sport-bike: Insurance rates. My '92 750 Zephyr cost about 1/10th the amount of my '92 ZX-6 to insure for a year. And honestly, the Zephyr was a lot more fun and, much more unique.
CONCLUSION: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I haven't seen any of these on the road in more than, geez... 10 or 12 years now. Kawasaki never sold these in great numbers because the American public never fell in love with the "naked sportbike" or even retro-bike concept to the level that cruisers or sport-bikes have enjoyed. Which is really too bad since some of the worlds best motorcycles fall into the standard or "naked-sportbike" categories such as the Bandit 400, Nighthawk-S/Nighthawk 750, CB-1, CB1000, Kawi ZRX, Yamaha Fazer, GPz1100... the list goes on.

If I could find another '92 Zephyr 750 even in fair condition I'd jump on it, restore it and keep it until my bones are too old to swing over the seat. The 750 Zephyr is by far the best looking, most enjoyable motorcycle I've ever owned, without reservation. And that's saying something since I've owned more than 100 motorcycles in my lifetime - so far!

RIDE SAFE: ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET AND USE THE HIGH-BEAM DURING DAYLIGHT.
